PPM to Molarity Calculator
Convert mass-based parts per million into molar concentration with an explicit solution-density correction.
01 Set up your calculation
- Check whether the reported value means mg per kg or mg per liter.
- Enter the solute’s molar mass.
- For mass-based ppm, enter the solution density at the relevant temperature.
02 The relationship
For the assumptions behind these results, read the explanation below. You can also explore Mass Concentration to Molar Concentration Conversion and Molarity.
Follow the numbers
58.44 ppm by mass of NaCl in a solution with density 1 g/mL corresponds to 58.44 mg/L. Dividing 0.05844 g/L by 58.44 g/mol gives 0.001 mol/L.
03 PPM needs a basis
Parts per million is a ratio, so its meaning depends on which quantities form the ratio. For a mass fraction, one ppm is one milligram per kilogram. Molarity instead counts moles in a liter of solution. Density supplies the bridge from solution mass to solution volume.
A result reported in mg/L is often casually called ppm for dilute water samples. That shortcut is close when density is close to 1 g/mL. The separate modes here make the assumption visible rather than silently using it for every liquid.
04 Choose the correct chemical species
The molar mass must match the substance represented by the mass concentration. A water-quality result reported as nitrogen is not the same mass basis as one reported as nitrate. Hydrated compounds and anhydrous compounds also require different molar masses.
This conversion does not translate gas-volume ppm into molarity. Gas composition requires pressure, temperature, and an appropriate gas model. It also does not infer ion activity, so the calculated molarity should not automatically be substituted into an activity-based equilibrium expression.
Questions from the notebook
When can I assume 1 ppm equals 1 mg/L?
For a dilute aqueous solution whose density is approximately 1 g/mL, when ppm is mass based.
Does the density belong to the solute?
No. Enter the density of the complete solution.
Can I enter ppb?
Divide a mass-based ppb value by 1,000 first to express it in ppm.
